Here is another shot of the comm. You can see the two different patinas where the front and back brushes ride. Although the pic doesn't show it the comm was quiet purple close to the riser.

Here is the reason the comm was getting upset. You can see that the brushes are barely seated. The hard hit area on the comm was actually the better seated brushes as it took most of the current.

This is why I like fiberglass wrap, ohhhhhhh. I added a 10 mil Nomex arimid paper wrap around between the coil and the pole shoe for added insulation. Sorry but I had no camera to show these dipped and installed : (
