VTR’s Variable Timing Rings

Well I teamed up with an old lost buddy of mine who owns a machine shop just one road up from me and he’s totally into EV’s I find out.  Showing him some of the stuff I’m doing I asked him if he’d be into duplicating them for me.  Allows me to make up the originals and ship them to him for small production runs.  It’s a two piece slip ring unit that one can install into the existing commutator end plate once a little machining is done.  It requiers that the riser feet that the brush ring sits on be machined down.  I believe that what’s good for the goose isn’t always good for the gandor so to speak.  A guy running 120 volts is timed a little to far at the standard advancement setting where as a guy packing heat like John Wayland or Bill Dube actually need a little more.  This isn’t just a advance it till it hurts device but one where a little less advance can be had.  For those who savor their eff, being about to tweak the timing may improve range (all of this is within reason now).

I did the Advance FB1-4001 (9″ motor) first and I’m offering it as a do-it-yourself item on top of my own installs.  I’m pondering whether buying a couple end plates to which I could modify them and offer them on an exchange program would be something people would concider.  In general it makes it available to those who may like to tinker or where freight becomes an issue.  Cost for the two piece ring assembly and replacement screws are $75.00 plus freight. If all goes well I’ll be offering several make, model and sizes but here’s a look at my first product.
