My first attempt at keeping Killacycles motors from flashing over met with mixed results. All and all there were good improvements overall in the amount of damage control that was obtained but there were a couple things that I felt needed improving. The biggest thing I didn’t like was the reaction from the Glyptal coated springs after they took some heat and I could see it kinda gummed them up. On the good note is all 8 springs stayed whole and working. I’m really not into sell hype so if I see something I don’t like it’s gone from my proceedures, so Glyptal coated springs are out of here.
I had installed just two 10 mil Nomex paper shields where all the previous arcing had occurred and locked them into place via the terminal insulators. With these two guards in place the arcing went to another holder so four guards are needed to keep from having a weak link.
With Bill Dube and team working out the details for an auto-engaged brush timing shift these gaurds now need to pivit with the brush ring. Anyway I got some 30 mil Nomex and made up some new style guards. John Wayland came by today and offered a suggestion to improve it so I remade them again, LMAO! The result were folded wings that sweep the entire holder.
It’s not perfect but a nice KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach at the problem. There is a small edge of about an 1/8″ of the holder that is left exposed. Being the Nomex sheet comes within an 1/8″ of the comm at the midway point I’m hoping that it’ll close the gap choking off the arcs ability to find and destroy the holder and springs. Before it could just shoot out straight and zap it, now it’ll have a longer path to jump. The nice thing about this is they can be used on just about any brush ring style, just a different size would be needed. Might be a really nice cheap way to add flashover protection for the guys pushing it 8^)
Anyway I put a couple pics up here
Hope you enjoy.
